What is Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)


Introduction


The TOEFL test helps you show how well you communicate in English to universities all around the world. The TOEFL test is recognized by more than 11,000 universities in over 150 countries worldwide including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and across Europe and Asia.


What is TOEFL?


The TOEFL iBT test is the world's most accepted English-language test for study, work and immigration.It is a multiple-choice examination unlike the IELTS. It is preferred by more universities and institutions, so you can be confident you'll stand out to admissions officers where it counts.


When is the right time to take the TOEFL?


The TOEFL test is administered up to 6 days a week around the world at authorized test centers or at home, giving you plenty of options. Timing is important though, as appointments can fill up quickly! We suggest you to give the examination 5-6 months prior to your admission and submission date so that even if you do not fare well in your first attempt, you have ample time to take it again!There is no limit to the number of times you can take the TOEFL!


How to take the TOEFL?


The TOEFL exam is one of the most convenient examinations for a student to take. You can visit the official TOEFL registration page to register for the exam and choose if you want to take the exam from the comfort of your home or in one of the centers available in your city. The test fee for a single attempt is $190 (or, Rs. 14,700/- approximately)


What is the format of the TOEFL?


The TOEFL exam is divided into 4 sections i.e. Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing. All sections combined are an examination of approximately 3 hours.

  • Reading - Approximately 35 questions based on the comprehension of 3-4 passages and answering questions for the same. This section should take approximately 60-65 minutes of your time.

  • Listening - Approximately 32 questions based on listening to a few lectures, conversations and classroom discussions and understanding your comprehending prowess in a fluent english conversation. This is followed by a break of 10 minutes.

  • Speaking - Candidates need to express their opinion on a topic familiar to them and speak based on reading and listening tasks. Has a total of 4 tasks and should take about 17 minutes.

  • Writing - Candidates need to write essay responses based on reading and listening tasks, along with supporting the opinion in writing. Includes a total of 4 tasks and should take about 50 minutes to complete.

All-in-all the total examination would take about 3 hours to complete!
