  • What are ECTS & how does it compare with the Indian education system? How to get more credits?

Some study abroad aspirants find it difficult to understand the concept of ECTS. At Edvisory, we make it simple for you ! Have a look at what the ECTS are all about. ECTS or as it is called the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, is only recognised and accepted across universities and academic institutions across Europe. We can say, it is basically an instrument for the European educational area, so as to keep the international education studies and programs more transparent. Basically, ECTS helps in converting the credits awarded at any institution towards a qualification which would be studied at a different institution, specifically in Europe. As far as the working structure of the ECTS is concerned, 60 credits awarded for any subject at any institution is equivalent to 1 full year of studies. So if we compare with the Indian Education system, where we have 3 or 4 year bachelors, the European institutions will be asking for 180 credits or 240 credits respectively for pursuing higher studies there. And accordingly, students can show subject wise transcripts, where the credits are mentioned. It’s simple, isn't it? In India usually, a Postgraduate Diploma offers 50-60 credits. Undergraduate degree program (three year): 120-150 credits. Undergraduate technical program (four year): 200-240 credits. Master's program: 100-120 credits. Want to study abroad but falling short of a few credits? Here is what we suggest: - Pursue courses on Govt. of India educational portal for credits, SWAYAM, it's free and accepted by more than 100 Indian universities - Pursue courses on Coursera, edx, MOOCs etc. It's both paid and free - Pursue an internship (online or offline in sync with your current degree) Duration of above solutions may vary from 4-16 weeks and may fetch you 4-40 credits, enough to cross the line.
